It was such an amazing experience, thinking about minimalist principles and what it is that you really do need to live and thrive and be creative. I think it’s really interesting, on a philosophical level, why women are drawn to the West, and the importance of solitude and space to develop into your own. Was part of that, and Par en Par is the most personal expression of that.
How to Become a Fashion Designer: Tips, Tricks, & What It Takes to Succeed
Also, there is usually a piece of art or an artist that I am looking at and drawn to that typically anchors the collection. Something that I put in the Spring collection that was influenced by living in L.A. That was a real hole in my personal wardrobe, moving from New York to L.A.
Transforming the Fashion Business
Donatella Versace is revered as a gay icon, as a feminist icon, as a personage whose image can be so easily conjured that only her first name is necessary for her to spring to the mind’s eye in all her blonde glory. We have been focused lately not only on ecological sustainability but also human sustainability. I’m thinking of the hands that make the work—the incredible craft in the atelier, and equally the people in the factories making incredible things for us. I hope people will be less attracted to quick, trendy stuff and more attracted to the idea of the hand, the love for the making. I don’t want to just throw that away and move on because of trends. We’d been doing the show thing for so long—in a way, you feel you have to be part of the game, because if you’re not it’s seen as a sign of weakness.
California Love: 25 Designers Who Are All About the West Coast
We had to delay the relaunch of couture at Balenciaga until January because you cannot do couture fittings on a screen. But I think one of the most modern things I can do as a designer today is to work on couture, because it’s exceptional; it’s something that you cannot massively produce. Conceptually speaking, it’s something that fashion has lost; something where you say, Wow—this is amazing.

You can access your lectures, readings and assignments anytime and anywhere via the web or your mobile device. Most of the Swiss fashion houses are in Zürich.[23] The Swiss look is casual elegant and luxurious with a slight touch of quirkiness. Additionally, it has been greatly influenced by the dance club scene. Berlin is the centre of fashion in Germany (prominently displayed at Berlin Fashion Week), while Düsseldorf holds Europe's largest fashion trade fairs with Igedo.

You will learn how methods used to predict, interpret, and forecast fashion can be viewed through the lens of social movements as well as political and pop cultural events. In this module, we will discuss the integration of artisanal and local made-by-hand design and craftsmanship into the design process. Through the lens of 20th century pop culture, we’ll find out how surface pattern design has reverberated through the fashion of the last century and into this millennium. We will also discuss provenance and heritage and ask who owns an idea, and where homage crosses over into appropriation. Most French fashion houses are in Paris, which is the capital of French fashion. Traditionally, French fashion is chic and stylish, defined by its sophistication, cut, and smart accessories.

I don’t really do market anymore, you burn out doing in-person markets, but it is so much fun. Your booth turns into all these young women, all talking about what’s going on in their love lives, and it’s just so much fun. It is such a great way to meet people and meet other cool women. I feel like that lends to things being wasteful, and I want my clothes to have a long-standing life, and be for women of all ages. Women in their 20s and 60s shop in my boutiques and they cater to both groups. Chalk up that phenomenal global success to her intuitive, sensitive approach.

A couple of months after I launched, Urban Outfitters contacted me because they were starting a little vintage capsule project here in L.A., and they were looking for people to source for them. I started working with them while I was still in New York. But I had wanted to leave New York for probably at least two years; I lived in NY for nine years, and I wanted to get off the MTA map and needed to change.
I did my senior fashion show, and one of the judges owned a boutique in San Francisco, and he gravitated toward the line, and he and his sister ordered my collection to be in their store. I was worn out and I had this job in high-end retail, and the store owners taught me so much about the industry and design and quality and craftsmanship and seeing the customer perspective and what customers want. In 2013, when San Francisco was kind of pricing everyone out, and that’s when I started Town Clothes. From shoes and jewelry to jeans and work and travel wear, these L.A.-based ready to wear lines are pragmatic and minimal, but also stunning—and you will want to pay attention to them all. They often operate outside of the traditional fashion calendar, because L.A.
The rapper's jaw-dropping lilac VMAs outfit, as well as the styling and creative direction for his debut album Montero, an instant classic not only for the bops but also for the music videos' scandalously sexy ensembles. "It means more than just being celebrated. For me, this is an opportunity to bring attention to people who look like me and who've always been told that style and fashion are unattainable for us. This is a mirror of reflection to show people that they can see themselves." I've announced myself, and I've made an impact, but I still have so much more to do.
The fashion industry is a highly competitive battleground, and to emerge victorious, designers must have a keen eye for cultural shifts or changes in taste. This course gives students the skills they’ll need to gather data from various sources and make educated predictions based on verifiable information. No matter what your passion is, chances are we have a degree program for you. Future fashion entrepreneurs thrive in our programs, experiencing first-hand the dedication, expertise, and immersive approach to learning that sets us apart from other fashion design colleges.
Fashion is about reflecting society and its values—but it also has to make people dream. With my new collections for both JW Anderson and Loewe, I’ve worked with ideas of extremities—like this idea of a cashmere roll-neck with a pair of jeans—and the idea of something incredibly fantastic, like the idea of dressing up, where it’s about craft. It’s about bombastic fashion; it’s escapism— it’s all of that in one. Madrid and Barcelona are the main fashion centers in Spain. Spanish fashion is often more conservative and traditional but also more 'timeless' than other fashion cultures.
The massiveness of this industry has to be put under questioning. Maybe this is a more important change than a new look or a new silhouette. While thinking about how we will move forward, I have been trying to find analogies in other businesses—but fashion isn’t exactly like art, and it’s not like furniture design either. Fashion is such a unique thing—it’s extremely emotional; it says something about who you are. Desirability doesn’t come from a merchandising plan—it comes from being fearless and doing what feels right.
